A Man Against Himself

"Over two decades, a once-promising Manchester architect spirals from comfort into poverty, illness anxiety and isolation - leaving his exasperated friends to decide whether to save him, section him, or finally walk away."

Maxwell's Madness is a darkly comic, emotionally brutal character drama about Maxwell George (aka Max) - a former heroin addict and architectural draughtsman whose life collapses not through one big tragedy, but through a thousand petty resentments, bad decisions and imagined illnesses.

Set in Manchester from 2007 to 2026, the series charts Max's journey from a man with a flat, a Maserati and a future, to a 56-year-old hypochondriac living in assisted housing, obsessed with his failing body and the belief that everyone else has abandoned him.

Max is not a conventional victim. He is funny, charismatic, intelligent - and also negative, self-sabotaging, jealous, volatile and almost pathologically resentful. The central dramatic question: when someone weaponises their suffering, at what point does compassion become complicity?

One Man's Magnificent Decline.

Maxwell's Madness spans 2007–2026 - a rich, character-driven story with enough depth, incident and dark humour to sustain multiple series across its full arc.

Series 1  ·  2007–2013

The Wasted Advantages

Max is at his relative high point: ten years clean, a flat in New Islington, a studio in the Northern Quarter. He sells up, pockets £250,000 and buys a Maserati he barely drives above 25 mph. A "pump and dump" share scam, a stint in Da Nang, and a disastrous kidney operation he was warned not to have - each one a step he can never walk back.

Series 2  ·  2013–2020

The Shrinking World

Max's world contracts. He loses the Maserati, gives up work, drifts between cheap hotel rooms in Vietnam and subsidised housing in Manchester. The tone is bittersweet: bedbug infestations, benefit reassessment paranoia, airport meltdowns over keys that were in his bag all along. But the viewer feels the weight of wasted opportunity and the slow death of a social circle.

Series 3  ·  2020–2026

Illness as Identity

After both parents die, Max becomes emotionally married to his illnesses. He abandons NA, spends hours researching morgues, asks friends to source him a gun, and insists he is genuinely dying despite mostly manageable diagnoses. On New Year's Day 2026, Phil, Ian, Alisha and Damon stage an intervention. Two possible endings - one tragic, one bleakly realistic - await.

Jeff Woolf OBE

Creator & Writer

Jeff Woolf OBE has no professional television credits whatsoever. He has, however, watched an extraordinary amount of it. Over several decades he has consumed box sets, soaps, prestige dramas, comedies and documentaries with a dedication that most writers reserve for the craft itself. He has also had a number of travel articles published, which is something. His OBE was awarded for services entirely unrelated to television.

Gary Fox

Creator & Writer

Gary Fox is similarly uncredentialled as a writer. What he lacks in professional experience he more than compensates for in informed, enthusiastic and occasionally furious engagement with great television. Together, he and Jeff have watched enough drama to know exactly what a good one looks like. They decided it was finally time to write one.
